If you are applying to study at a university in an English language country you will likely be required to take a standardized English language test.

The two common standardized tests are:

IELTS: International English Language Testing Service
TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language

Which should you study?

Step one is to learn which test the University you are applying to requires.
Many now accept either IELTS or TOEFL.

The purpose of each test is the same.
However I have found the popular IELTS study guides to be a little easier
for my students to utilize and follow.

What is different about the two tests?

One major difference is the speaking test.
The IELTS speaking test is done face to face with an examiner.
With TOEFL, the speaking test consists of six questions which you answer into a microphone.
These are recorded and sent to an examiner to mark.

The thought of a face to face speaking test often puts fear into many students,
however with preparation and pratice my students have found that a conversation (speaking test)
face to face with an examiner is more comfortable.
